About Trek to Har Ki Dun - Himalayas

About Place: Cloaked in mystery, and located at an altitude of 3566m, this almost untouched land is situated in the westernmost part of the Himalayas. A challenge to the adventurers, Har-ki-Dun is supposed to have shared part of its history with the Pandavas.

Har-ki-Dun (Har stands for Hari, or Lord Krishna, the blue-god, and Dun means valley), lies in the westernmost Himalayas of Garhwal, sharing its boundary with eastern Himachal Pradesh, and is dominated by the Swargarohini peak (6096m).


What is included in the tour

  • Travel fro Dehradun to Base camp and Back to Dehradun ( Day-1, Day-7)
  •  Any hotel accommodation.
  •  Horses with horsemen to carry your loads on the route.
  •  Your Accommodation or any other expenses before or after the trek schedule.
  •  Extra food apart from above mentioned things.
  •  Anything is not mentioned above.

Things to Carry List :

  • Backpack (55 – 65 L) with sturdy straps and supporting frame. Quechua Forclaz 60 is a good choice.
  • Daypack (20-25 L) – optional. Useful for summit/pass day, handy if you want to offload your backpack on the trek.
  • Trekking shoes – Sports shoes are an absolute NO in trekking. You need Traction on Snow and Sport Shoes with PVC soles hardly justifies the choice. Ensure the shoes are well used before the trek. Forclaz 500 and Woodland are good choices.
  • 3 pair of track pants (at least one should be synthetic quick-dry kind). Or 3 pair of cotton pants with lots of pockets. Track pants are light and we highly recommend them. Plus when things get really cold then layers of clothes matter.
  • 3 cotton t-shirt with collar.
  • One full Sleeve Sweater. A fleece jacket would be an alternative.
  • A full sleeve thick Jacket.
  • 4 pairs of Undergarments.
  • 1 pair of Thermal Inners.
  • 4-5 pair of Sports Socks.
  • Woolen Monkey cap/Balaclava that cover the ear.
  • Light weight Rain Coat/Poncho (to escape a quick burst of rain).
  • Hand Gloves (water proof).
  • Sun glasses – Buy the one which will cover your eyes well. Choose from Black, Green, Brown. Blue coloured Sunglass cannot block UV rays.
  • Avoid multi toned ones too. Sunglasses prevent snow blindness, and are mandatory for treks.
  • Sun Cap and/or Head-Scarf.
  • Trekking Pole is mandatory.
  • Light towel (a quick drying kind).
  • Chap stick or Lip Balm.
  • Cold Cream and Sun Screen Lotion (SPF 40+).
  • 2 Water bottles (1 L each). Do not carry packaged water bottles.
  • LED torch with extra set of cells/ Head Lamps (preferred).
  • Personal Toilet Kit (minimal) and Toilet Paper.
  • Small Repair Kit consisting of Safety Pins, Needle, Thread and String (mandatory).
  • Slippers/Sandals (for walking around campsite).
  • While there are adequate food provided on trek, some do feel very less energetic compared to others. So you can carry few energy bars, dry fruits, etc
  • Camera, writing or recording material to log your experience.


Itinerary

  • Day - 1 Dehradun to Sankri ( 210 Kms, 9-10 Hours Drive)
  • We start early from Dehradun and reach the villageSankriby evening. The final stretch is through the GovindPashu National Park after we cross a check post at Netwar. We rest at night in a guest house or in camps.(We will hire a cab at Dehradun to drive to Sankri & the costing will be shared among all the participants)


Day - 2

  • Sankri to Osla (2200m) – 1 Hrs Drive and 5/6 Hrs Trek .
  • Post breakfast we are transported from Sankrito Taluka. The drive is a bit bumpy. The trek commences from Taluka on a stony path. With the river Tons gushing through rapids beside us, under the shade of walnut, pine and other trees, the walk is quite pleasant. Often the passing villagers greet us on the way. The path crosses over a few streams which merge with Tons. After a few hours of walk the village of Gangad can be seen towards the left, across the river. We continue our hike and then cross a bridge for the final stretch. After about fifteen minutes of uphill walk, our destination unfolds itself ‐ the quaint village of Osla. We set camp here or stay in a hut with a local family.


Day - 3

  • Osla to Har-Ki-Dun (3510 m) 6/7 hrs trek
  • From Osla the trail gradually rises higher and passes through bushes of flowers like orchids, fleece flowers and sunflowers. The ascending path climbs high above the confluence of Tons river and the river from Ruinsara valley.After traversing higher up along the left side of the river, we camp at a very panoramic spot in Har ki Dun, located at the junction of two valleys – one originating from Jaundhar glacier and the other from beyond Hata glacier.


 Day - 4 

  • Explore Har Ki Dun
  • Usually we spend a layover day here at Har ki Dun. The vast open meadows following the course of the Tons river can be explored. Further ahead of the meadows one can walk among the forests of Bhojpatra trees (Himalayan birch) or get a closer glimpse of the Jaundhar glacier and Swargarohini peak.


Day - 5

  • Back to Osla 4/5 Hrs trek
  • The journey back to Osla is an easy walk. After reaching, one can roam about in the village, talk to locals and soak in the Garhwali culture.


Day - 6

  • Osla to Sankri 5/6 Hrs trek .
  • Early in the morning, we bid farewell to the villagers of Osla and hike till Taluka. A vehicle from Taluka takes us back to Sankri, where we retire for the day in camps or guest house.


Day - 7

  • Sankri to Dehradun ( 210 Kms, 9-10 Hours Drive)
  • Depart from Sankri to Dehradun/Rishikesh (8-10 Hrs. drive). (We will hire a cab at Sankri to drive to Dehradun & the costing will be shared among all the participants)


Note:

  • There is a different permission charge for Foreigner & the difference amount should be paid by the   participant on spot.
  • The itinerary can be changed, in case of snow, rainfall and landslides.
  • We advise you keep a extra day and plan your travel because the weather in the himalaya is unpredictable.
