About Festival of Ideas: David Cannadine
The historian David Cannadine delivers a lecture on ‘The Statesman as Artist’, taking a closer look at Winston Churchill’s talents as a painter.
Over almost 50 years, Winston Churchill produced more than 500 paintings. His subjects included his family homes at Blenheim and Chartwell, evocative coastal scenes on the French Riviera and sun-drenched landscapes of Marrakesh in Morocco. He also painted still-lifes and even an extraordinarily revealing self-portrait, painted during a particularly troubled time in his life. In times of both war and peace, Churchill came to enjoy painting as his primary means of relaxation from the strain of public affairs. In this lecture, David Cannadine reveals how Churchill’s passion for art wasn’t just a private hobby, but an essential part of his public persona.
David Cannadine is a historian and author who specialises in modern history and is currently teaching at Princeton. His books include The Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy (1990), Class in Britain (1998), Ornamentalism: How the British saw their Empire (2001), George V: The Unexpected King (2014), Margaret Thatcher: A Life and Legacy (2016), Victorious Century: The United Kingdom, 1800-1906 (2017) and most recently Churchill: The Statesman as Artist (2017). He is the Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and President of The British Academy, the national academy for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
This event will be followed by a Q&A, chaired by the Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy, Charles Saumarez Smith.
