About Beginners Castanets (Spanish Dance)

Join us on Saturdays (4pm) to learn and have fun with the basics of CASTANETS! Castanets are finger percussion that we use in Spanish Dances, particularly for Classical Spanish Dance and sometimes in flamenco too.

GREAT FOR:
- Building rhythm: This pure beginners class is great for building rhythm, because afterall, castanets are instruments.
- Building coordination: you'll be learning finger techniques and growing strength in each of your finger, while maintaining the proper posture for your hands. You will be working these rhythms to the coordination of arm movements.
- Body awareness and posture: you will additionally be coordinating your castanets to simple dance movement phrases, for a holistic dance approach.
- Musicians who wish to learn the castanets (for whom the dance movements part of the class may be optional)
This is not a choreographic class, so Beginners can join ANY week; instead you will be working on movement phrases and the basic techniques of castanets, which is repeated weekly so that pure beginners can gain foundation over time.

SUITABLE FOR:
1. PURE BEGINNERS, with no castanet or dance background, and who appreciate spending time to familiarise themselves with rhythms and practise body coordination, through repeated dance movement phrases.
2. Once you have built up an introductory foundation in this Sat 1pm class, you may consider taking up the other classes, such as the Thursday 1pm-2.30pm (1.5h) or Thurs 7.30pm-8.30pm Classical Spanish Dance course.

INSPIRED LIVING - THROUGH DANCE!
We offer dance education where students will gain from and experience the following:
a. A style of teaching that is influenced by Spain's Academia de Manuel Betanzos (Sevilla) and guided by Paloma Gómez (Madrid), former Principal Dancer of Spain's Ballet Nacional de España. Both Maestros conduct annual teaching programmes in Singapore.
Students work on building a good foundation, technique, discipline and importantly, the quality of their dancing. Students also work on building awareness of the use of their body. Then going beyond foundational technique and mere steps, students are encouraged to find and develop their own individual expressivity and artistry.

b. Performance-based
Working beyond learning within the classroom towards exposure to real performance scenarios

c. Art for the Heart and Soul
Students are invited to an experience of the spirit of Spanish dance and the vibrant culture of Spain, enjoying its beauty, expressiveness and joie de vivre. Discover dance as an expression of the human spirit!
