About Roller Coaster 2018 (Manali - Leh Cycling expedition)

A land like no other, bounded by two of the world’s mightiest mountain ranges, the Great Himalaya and the Karakoram. An amazing world of cold barren desert mountains of various colors, different temperaments, rivers, streams, stones, sand, glaciers, lakes, prayer wheels, monasteries, stupas, Thupka, maggi basic living!

Manali – Leh Highway: The 485 km route opens only for 4 months in the year, June to Sept. Every turn in this route offers fascinating, breath taking views, amazing landscapes, clear skies, unbelievable sights! Seems like you are riding through a “Museum” of the mountain ranges, which are of all kinds! Lush green terrain in Manali, brown, black, grey mountains towards Leh. The colors though dull are unique and pleasing to the eyes, a few of them seem like God had painstakingly painted each one of them in various colour combinations, Neat strokes of brown, grey, rust, black, dark brown, amber, maroon a real paradise for any artist visiting Ladakh. A few of them covered with snow, melting to form small streams of water that add even more life to the barren giant mountains. Some are covered with sand, confusing the human eye. Some seem so calm & serene, while some stare at you with vengeance. Some are in very different, weird shapes, wild mountains, some are dusted with the shade of the clouds, making the colour combination even more interesting, they seem almost unnatural like someone had just painted these scenes and created an artificial set around you depicting the various ‘Moods’ of the mountains!

The average elevation of Leh-Manali highway is more than 4,000 m (13,000 feet) and its highest elevation is 5,328 m (17,480 ft) at Tanglang La mountain pass. It is flanked by mountain ranges on both sides featuring some stunning sand and rock natural formations.

The highway crosses many small streams of ice-cold water from snow-capped mountains and glacial melts without a bridge and it requires riding skill to negotiate fast-flowing streams. The landscape changes immediately after getting past Rohtang Pass and entering into Chandra river valley in Lahaul region. The greenery on the southern side of the mountain pass disappears and the mountain slopes on the leeward side become brown and arid. However, the mountain peaks are covered in snow and shine brightly in sun.

Leh-Manali highway is generally two lanes wide (one lane in either direction) without a road-divider but has only one or one and a half lanes at some stretches. The highway has many damaged stretches and under-maintenance portions where even a little rainfall can trigger landslide making it very dangerous to cross that stretch of the road.
