About Festival of Ideas: Judith Kerr

50 years after the publication of ‘A Tiger who Came to Tea’, best-selling author and illustrator Judith Kerr talks about her life, work and escape from Nazi Germany.

Born in Berlin in 1923, Kerr escaped from Germany with her family at the age of nine, arriving in England in 1936. She wrote about her experiences in her semi-autobiographical novel, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit.

Kerr won a scholarship to the Central School of Arts in 1945, and since then has worked as an artist, television scriptwriter and, for the past 30 years, as an author and illustrator of children’s books. The Tiger Who Came to Tea was Kerr’s first picture book, published in 1968. The book has become a classic and sold over 10 million copies, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Kerr is also renowned for her creation of the Mog series, which has featured on bestseller lists for the past 30 years and has sold more than four million copies.

She received an OBE for services to literature and Holocaust education in 2013.
This event is open to all ages, but recommended for ages 5+.
