About GSAPP Summer Social at MoMA PS1

Join fellow GSAPP alumni for the annual Summer Social, as we celebrate the work of the 2018 Young Architects Program winners, Jennifer Newsom and Tom Carruthers, co-founders of Dream The Combine.

Newsom and Carruthers will speak about their work on this year’s temporary outdoor installation at MoMA PS1 in conversation with GSAPP faculty member Christoph Kumpusch at 7pm. The discussion will be followed by a reception in the installation at 8pm.

Dream The Combine is the creative practice of artists and architects Jennifer Newsom and Tom Carruthers, based in Minneapolis. Partners in work and life, they create site-specific installations exploring metaphor, imaginary environments, and perceptual uncertainties that cast doubt on our known understanding of the world. Working with engineer Clayton Binkley of ARUP and a trusted group of fabricators, Dream The Combine investigate the conceptual overlaps in art, architecture, and cultural theory through structures that disrupt assumed dichotomies and manipulate the boundary between real and illusory space. Their work has been featured in The New York Times, Huffington Post, Vancouver Sun, FoxNews, CTV, Metropolis Magazine, Modern Midwest, The Architects Newspaper, and Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African-American Experience.

The Young Architects Program (YAP), is an annual competition hosted by The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 that fosters innovative architecture. The winning design, Hide & Seek, by Jennifer Newsom and Tom Carruthers of Dream The Combine, in collaboration with Clayton Binkley of ARUP, will be on view at MoMA PS1 during the summer 20
